He's Got a Plan For That!
Guest Post by: Mikey Brooks
It is good to be back on this blog. As some of you might remember
it has only been about 6 months since you last saw me. Then I was sharing a
little about my first book, The Dream
Keeper, and sharing a message about taking a leap of faith. Today I want to
continue that topic of faith and perhaps get a little more personal. I think by
sharing this story it might help some of you who may be struggling with the
same things.
A little over a year ago I woke up and was unable to move my
body. It literally felt like I had been strapped down to my bed. My arms and
legs ached and I had no idea what was wrong with me. My wife had to help me out
of bed and down the stairs. I called into work and later went to the doctor. The
tests began…all four months of them. I won’t go into the details but I will
share that during those months it was a huge trial of my faith. I had ran out
of vacation time and my short-term disability was barley covering the mortgage.
I feared the worst for my family financially. I didn’t understand why God had
done this to me. I was losing faith.
By the fifth month of testing the doctors finally discovered
that the Crohn’s Disease, that I’d had for the past few years, spread, giving
me disabling arthritis. I learned that although the doctors could treat the
Crohn’s, the arthritis would most likely remain forever. As I was unresponsive
to medication the conditions of the arthritis continued. My short-term
disability ran out and my employer was forced to let me go. So now I was
unemployed, the sole provider for a family of four, and we had a baby on the
way—not to mention I couldn’t stand or walk for more than fifteen minutes at a
time. Outwardly I was holding it together—inwardly I was freaking out. I had to
keep telling myself that God had a plan for me. I had to exercise the faith
that He would take care of me and my family. And believe me, he did!
To understand how God has really blessed me in all this, I
have to take you back to the many times my wife and I prayed before any of this
happened. I wanted more than anything to be a writer. I got my degree in
creative writing but that hadn’t taken me anywhere. I was still managing a
bakery, working horrible hours, and always too tired when I got home to write.
Each and every night Brooke and I would pray that I would find time to write.
That somehow the Lord would provide it for us. As much as the arthritis is a
pain, it is really a blessing. Brooke and I got exactly what we asked for: more
time for me to write. It didn’t stop there. The time I was given allowed me to
start my own business with as a freelance illustrator and cover designer. Now I
am doing what I have always loved to do. I get to help other authors and I have
found time to write. Nine months since the morning I woke up unable to move I
have published three picture books I author/illustrated, four more picture
books I illustrated for other authors, and I released my first novel. Today I
am excited to announce the release of my second novel, The Dreamstone.

A little About THE DREAMSTONE
SYNOPSIS:
In Book 1, The Dream Keeper, Parker and Kaelyn discovered that Dreams was a real
place that everyone visits while they sleep. An evil nightmare named Fyren took
control of the gateway to that world. Parker and Kaelyn teamed up with
Gladamyr, the only dream keeper to escape capture by Fyren, and together they save
Dreams from Fyren’s rule. After the defeat of Fyren the children return to
Awake to find Mab, Fyren’s next in command, has dreamnapped Parker’s mom.
The
story continues in Book 2, The Dreamstone,
as the children return to Dreams to save Parker’s mom. Finding her, however, is
not their only problem. Mab has waged a war on the Crossing and has sent an army
of dragons to bring it down, nightmares have been released from prison, and
Gladamyr has lost his powers to shape-shift. Parker, Kaelyn, and Gladamyr must
once again defy all odds to set things right and save Parker’s mom before it’s
too late.
In
Praise of THE DREAMSTONE:
“The Dreamstone, by Mikey Brooks, is a wild stallion
of a story: fast, thrilling, and unpredictable. I was hooked in chapter one. If
he can snare the attention of an old reader like me, he’ll have kids sneaking
this one into class underneath their text books…If this one isn’t a
kid-pleaser, I don’t know what is.” –Michelle Isenhoff, author of the Divided Decade Trilogy and the Taylor Davis Series.
“This really is a cracking novel.
Action-packed and spellbinding!”—Cas Peace, author of The Artisans of Albia series.
"If you like the Percy Jackson, Fablehaven, or the Harry Potter series, you'll love this!" –An Amazon Reviewer.

Thanks for letting me spill my guts all over your blog...really, thanks for allowing me the opportunity to be more open about my faith and how Heavenly Father has blessed me. Oh, and thanks for featuring my book!
ReplyDeleteThank YOU! This life is truly about us as spiritual beings, having a mortal experience, and you captured how truly mortal it can be ... perfectly. Come back any time. :) I'm always glad to help others share matters of the heart!
ReplyDeleteAwesome post, Mikey! Thank you so much for sharing how you used something that is negative in so many ways and turned it into good. I used to pray that I could somehow be a stay-at-home mom, but we were so strapped financially that I never thought it would be possible. Then I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis and eventually had to quit working. Sometimes answered prayers are nothing like we expect, but it's a blessing when we recognize and accept them for what they are. I wish you huge success with our artistic pursuits.
