Decisions Determine Destiny

D is for Decisions Determine Destiny

Often in life, it's hard to not play the What If? game. I'm guilty of playing it quite often. What if I didn't get on that plane? What if I didn't go on that date? What if I didn't go to that specific place at that specific time? What if I didn't help a certain person? What if I didn't read that article? What if I didn't write that journal entry? My life would be completely different, and I know it. In the words of Thomas S. Monson, "Decisions determine destiny."

Decisions that seem 'small' can have a far greater impact than we realize. I've had countless experiences show me that. Just last week, I had a last minute change of plans and wound up going to the Oquirrh Mountain temple. There, I had an incredible experience with a woman who needed a friend, because I was in the right place at the right time. That wasn't a coincidence. It never is. And days later, I'm still thinking about that woman and all she taught me.

I've made some pretty big decisions, too. I'm immensely grateful that I chose to move to Utah. I'm awed by the blessings of having chosen to go through the temple. I'm completely indebted to my eight-year-old self who chose to be baptized. Decisions matter.

We can't go through life and assume that we'll walk a certain path unless we choose to step onto that path. We can't expect a result unless we make an effort. We can't expect to end a journey until we begin it, and until we go the distance. That's the truth of the matter, and really, it's a wonderful truth. We have the privilege and blessing of being able to choose. Yes, there are many circumstances and trials that we have no control over. But still, no event can ever take away our agency. We are always able to choose how we will react, what we will learn, who we will become, etc.

Make wise choices, my friends. They will make all the difference. When you face a difficult decision, don't just think about what you want in this moment. One of the wisest quotes I've ever heard is this: (It's been said by many, and I'm not sure who originally came up with it) “Never give up what you want most for what you want today.” Amen to that.

Lots of love,
Bonnie Gwyn
